Despite the transfer window shutting less than a week ago, you’d forgive Arsenal fans for still being on a high. It’s no laughing matter; despite being in the Premier League and Champions League, they’ve had to watch as their club failed to spend any money as their nearest rivals collected title after title.
For a change, though, the deadline day spotlight was firmly on the Emirates as hundreds of fans stood and prayed that the news of Mesut Ozil’s imminent transfer was true. Was it going to meet the deadline or was something going to go wrong at the dying moment? This wasn’t an ordinary signing; Ozil is one of the best players in the world and Wenger eventually pulled it off. Arsenal are now odds-on with Paddy to finish in the top four, with Spurs 6/4.
A day earlier the Gunners had done well to upset the Premier League betting odds by beating Spurs, with their midfield looking strong throughout. So far in the short period, Wilshere, Ramsay, Rosicky, Cazorla, Walcott, Chamberlain and Podolski have all featured in midfield.
But the arrival of Ozil will see somebody drop out. With Giroud on fire, Arsenal fans can look forward to Ozil playing behind the Frenchman and hopefully laying plenty of chances on a plate. Wilshere and Ramsay will be expected to sit and hold and Rosicky will be unlucky to drop out but he’s no match for Ozil. With Ozil pulling the strings in midfield, Arsenal could see Walcott and Podolski/Cazorla running in behind and causing chaos for the opposition.
Whatever Wenger chooses to do, Ozil will be a key figure for the rest of the season and even the neutrals will be excited about his role in the team. He’s a class above and if given a free role could cause serious damage in the Premier League.
