Video: Ian Callaghan vs Derby County 1971

After a knee injury in the early seventies, Ian Callaghan was moved in off the wing to instead play in midfield for Liverpool.

“To me, it’s the most rewarding position,” Callaghan said, “giving me more satisfaction than the first phase of my career as a raiding winger… I wasn’t adverse to going into a tackle. Even when I had been operating on the flank, I used to intercept passes in midfield quite often and go haring away. Playing in midfield was a challenge I was glad to accept”.

In December 1971, as Liverpool faced title rivals Derby County, Callaghan showcased his abilities in his new position, showing great energy defensively and firm forward-thinking passing.
