A hat-trick from Alun Evans and Ian Ross man-marking Franz Beckenbauer saw Liverpool saunter past Bayern Munich into the semi-finals of the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup.
There they would meet Don Revie’s Leeds United, who had emerged out of the shadow of Liverpool and Manchester United to become the dominant team of the late sixties and early seventies.
