Having fallen behind Everton and Leeds in the league, Liverpool’s attention turned to the FA Cup. Wins over Coventry, Wrexham and Leicester saw them advance to the sixth round, where they would face Watford.
Presently barely avoiding relegation to the Third Division, Watford should have been a forgettable pushover as Liverpool advanced to the semi-finals. Instead, it would become one of the most significant matches of Bill Shankly’s tenure.
