
Liverpool’s title defence was over before Christmas, but the signing of Geoff Strong, introduction of Chris Lawler and Tommy Smith, and a new tactical change saw Liverpool go unbeaten through the winter, only losing again at the end of February.
Dropping out of the title race so early also meant Liverpool could focus on other ambitions, such as becoming the first British team to win the European Cup, entering European competition for the first time thanks to their success the season before.
Liverpool eased past Knattspyrnufélag Reykjavíkur and Anderlecht, but had some problems against Georg Knöpfle’s Köln in the quarter-finals.
