Andrea Pirlo steps in front of Robbie Fowler to block the pass into his feet, but Dirk Kuyt makes a run across to make himself available, forcing Kakha Kaladze to get close as Alessandro Costacurta lets him go. Costacurta had two men to track at the far post – Cafu had been able to sprint up and down the touchline deep into his thirties but getting back so fast is a bit more difficult at 48 – and opted to mark Kuyt, as he was in the more dangerous central position. However with Kuyt making a run away he take some steps back to defend against Luis Garcia, who’s making a run inside anyway.
With Kuyt dragging Kaladze away from the centre and Pirlo not paying attention to him, Fowler makes an untracked run into the box as Johnson crosses. Costacurta immediately notices the run and moves across but Fowler gets there first to finish.
